Project Overview
The roof of Claremont Plaza Woolworths in Tasmania was suffering from extensive galvanic corrosion, surface rust, and water ingress due to incompatible metals, including zincalume ridge caps on galvanised roofing. These issues were progressively weakening the roof structure, threatening leaks and long-term deterioration.
Thermoshield was engaged to implement a multi-stage roof restoration process, addressing corrosion at its source, re-sealing structural components, and finishing with a high-performance ceramic membrane. This solution provided thermal protection, waterproofing, and corrosion resistance — extending the lifespan of the roof and safeguarding the infrastructure.
Key Benefits Delivered
Permanent Rust Conversion
- Rusted steel components were chemically converted into stable metal phosphates, halting active corrosion.
- This process was irreversible, transforming vulnerable surfaces into sealed, non-reactive structures.
Galvanic Corrosion Protection
- Incompatible materials (zincalume ridge caps on galvanised sheeting) were electrically insulated using Thermoshield’s non-conductive ceramic coating, preventing galvanic reactions.
- Thermoshield acts as both an electronic and moisture insulator, breaking the corrosion cycle.
Comprehensive Waterproofing
- All flashing, lap joints, screw heads, and corroded areas were treated with a high-microfibre membrane system, paintable silicone, and expandable foam.
- Final sealing with Thermoshield ensured a non-permeable, flexible membrane across the roof.
Thermal Insulation
- Thermoshield’s ceramic coating, made from millions of hollow ceramic beads, formed a 2mm reflective membrane that significantly reduced heat gain.
