Project Overview
The Mentone Office, a key facility for the City of Kingston, was suffering from general wear, surface rust, and reduced energy efficiency due to years of exposure and ageing roof infrastructure. Thermoshield was engaged to perform a full roof refurbishment, ensuring the building was sealed, protected, and thermally optimised for years to come.
The project utilised Thermoshield’s proven rust remediation, waterproofing, and ceramic coating system, delivering both aesthetic renewal and structural longevity — with zero interruption to council operations.
Key Benefits Delivered
Comprehensive Rust Treatment
- Applied chemical rust converter to corroded areas, transforming unstable rust into a stable metal phosphate.
- Followed by etch primer to lock in protection and enhance adhesion for coating layers.
Sealing & Waterproofing
- Ridgecaps, screws, joints, and penetrations were sealed using:
- Paintable silicone
- Fibre-reinforced membranes
- Expandable foam for overlapping panels
- Delivered a completely sealed surface, protecting the roof against water ingress and ongoing corrosion.
Thermal Performance Upgrade
- Two coats of Thermoshield ceramic membrane were applied to reflect UV and infrared radiation.
- Resulted in lower internal heat gain and reduced cooling demands for office occupants.
Low-Disruption Project Execution
- Works were completed with no impact to council services or staff accessibility.
- Fast, clean, and safety-compliant operation using harnesses and fall protection.
Scope of Works
Roof Preparation
- Power washed roof surfaces at 3,500 psi to remove oxidisation, dust, and contaminants
- Rust-affected screws and panels stabilised with rust converter
Surface Priming
- Full etch primer coating to enable strong ceramic membrane adhesion and prevent flash rusting
Waterproofing
- All vulnerable points sealed with specialist coatings and materials
- Ensured structural joints remained protected from thermal cycling and water exposure
Final Coating
- Two-layer Thermoshield membrane in a reflective white finish
- Durable, flexible coating that expands/contracts with temperature changes
