Project Overview
Building B at Deakin University’s Burwood campus was undergoing a major HVAC system upgrade. A large rooftop platform was to be installed to support new air conditioning units. However, the roof was showing signs of wear, including widespread rust bloom, and risked early degradation — posing a significant future maintenance and cost burden.
Thermoshield was engaged to provide a complete restoration solution: combining rust conversion, spot repairs, and ceramic insulation coating. The goal was to extend the roof’s life, improve thermal performance, and avoid costly future roof replacement, particularly beneath newly installed HVAC equipment.

Asset Preservation
- Treated isolated corrosion with a multi-step rust repair system, including:
- Rust converter
- Waterproofing bandage
- Inhibitor etch primer
- Final sealing beneath Thermoshield coating
- Prevented further rust formation by blocking environmental exposure (oxygen, moisture, and UV).
Avoided Major Costs
- The deteriorated roof area — especially under planned HVAC systems — could have required full replacement within 5 years.
- Roof replacement beneath mechanical platforms would have been extremely difficult and expensive.
- Thermoshield prolonged roof life by 10+ years, significantly reducing capital expenditure risk.
Thermal & Waterproofing Performance
- Applied three coats of Thermoshield ceramic insulation membrane to ensure:
- Solar reflectivity
- Moisture resistance
- Reduced heat absorption
- The result: enhanced thermal efficiency and water shedding, protecting both the structure and new HVAC investment.
Precision Application
- Project involved:
- High-pressure washing
- Overnight tarp protection due to unpredictable Melbourne weather
- Specific application techniques (backhand/forehand passes) to ensure full rib coverage and coating uniformity
- Applied first two coats in white, followed by final coats in Shale Grey, giving the roof a modern, refreshed finish
Weather Adaptation
- Installation was completed during May under cold, wet conditions.
- Overnight covers were used to support curing below 10°C, maintaining coating integrity despite environmental challenges.
Visual Transformation
- Before/after comparisons highlight dramatic aesthetic improvement
- Originally rust-stained and dull → now clean, uniform, and protected
- Coated surfaces now appear “like new” with long-term protection in place
