Project Overview
The University of Melbourne’s Werribee Campus required a comprehensive roof restoration to address surface corrosion, internal heat gain, and roof deterioration across multiple buildings. The ageing structures, critical to academic and operational functions, were approaching the threshold of requiring full re-roofing.
Thermoshield was contracted to deliver a long-life ceramic membrane system that would halt corrosion, improve thermal performance, and extend the life of these university assets — without the cost or disruption of roof replacement.
Key Benefits Delivered
Rust Stabilisation
- Roofs affected by surface rust were chemically treated with rust converter, halting ongoing degradation.
- Followed by etch primer across all surfaces, bonding and reinforcing the substrate.
Thermal Efficiency
- Application of Thermoshield ceramic membrane formed a UV-reflective barrier, significantly reducing solar heat absorption.
- Helped lower internal temperatures in buildings used for academic, administrative, and technical purposes.
Waterproofing Protection
- Final membrane system was fully sealed, providing protection from water ingress and moisture retention — ideal for large, flat-roof university structures.
Extended Asset Life
- The coating system extended the lifespan of the roofing infrastructure by 15–20 years.
- Delivered long-term cost savings by avoiding full roof replacement.

- Full roof coated with etch primer for protection and adhesion

- Two full coats of Thermoshield ceramic coating applied across entire roof surface

- Final inspection to ensure waterproofing and thermal sealing integrity
